WHERE CAN I DROP DONATIONS?

Please contact Helen on kiwihels@gmail.com in the first instance.  There are two collect/storage school s in New Zealand but at times this will change.

WHEN DO YOU START COLLECTING DONATIONS EACH YEAR?

Collection usually begins in May each year and goes through to November.

WHEN IS CLOSING DATE FOR DONATIONS EACH YEAR?

Usually in November, but please email kiwihels@gmail.com for details as this can change depending on shipping arrangements.

HOW DO I PACK DONATIONS?

  • DONATIONS such as BOOKS and STATIONERY must be in photocopy-size boxes, taped and wrapped, ready to be places on the ship, preferably water resistant.

  • Remember these boxes will be transported by zodiac (rubber inflatable boat) and then carried by villagers some distance to the schools, hence the packing requirements as above.

  • If you have a number of the same titles, feel free to mix them in between boxes, or keep in sets of 6-8.

  • If you would like to put in a personal 'hello' note to the school, feel free to do so!

FURTHER INFORMATION THAT MAY BE HELPFUL

Instructional Reader Texts / School Journals:

PRIMARY-AGE FOCUS

  • English-medium instructional reader texts are highest on our wish list.

  • Most New Zealand schools have a ‘stock’ of leveled instructional readers and journals that are used for reading instruction (such as the Ready to Read series, PM series, Sunshine series etc).

  • For various reasons schools move stock out of circulation over time.  Often these excess/old texts are dumped.  We aim to gather reasonable quality texts/reader books and ship these to remote village schools.

  • We also can take good quality library books that are being moved out of circulation.

  • With the learning level, we only need primary resources.  Children in the villages who go onto secondary school leave to go to larger centres and attend boarding school.

Other Learning Resources

  • We also take educational-style posters such as alphabet friezes, poem cards, colour/shape/number posters, and basic games which are complete and in reasonable condition.

  • Please - we ask that you sort through any resources you donate, so we don't take items that are unsuitable in age or content.

  • Single photocopy pages / blackline masters need to be tidy and stored  in something like a manila folder.

  • As an environmentally-conscious Project, we ask that you do not donate any plastic-based items.

  • Please, no CD's / DVD's / casette tapes - there is no electricity in these villages.

Quantities of resources?  How do we pack and send the donations?

  • We would be grateful for any resource amounts from a handful of books in a courier bag, to photocopy-paper-sizeboxes.  It all helps!

  • Please - no large heavy boxes as they are hard to move,  Apple-boxes and banana-boxes are too bulky,  They are too heavy to move onto the zodiac boats to take ashore and for locals to carry some distance from shore to village school.  Please break these into smaller manageable lots

  • If posters are being sent, please courier in a tube of some sort.

  • We ask that you wrap resources in a waterproof bag to ensure no water damage occurs enroute.

Feel free to add a small note with the box saying where the resources have been donated from and this can be given to the village.

Last year we had several New Zealand students set a holiday task to 'pack a learning resources box' to be taken up to the villages with a letter included.  What a great idea!
